Like a scene straight out of an action movie, Ntuthuko Cele was sitting on a chair on Tuesday evening, mindlessly scrolling through his phone, when a Ford Bantam plunged through his bedroom wall, sending bricks flying across the room and forcing him to make a narrow escape. “Only God knows how I came out of this unharmed,” Cele said of the incident, which took place at around 8pm. Ntuthuko Cele recounts how he narrowly survived a horrific accident after a bakkie ploughed into the room he was renting in Imbali Unit 2, leaving the structure badly damaged and narrowly missing him.
The incident occurred late on Tuesday night and was attended to by authorities, including KwaZulu Private Ambulance who confirmed no one was injured. I was about to go to bed when I heard something approaching, which made me get up and move towards the door.
“But before I could leave, the van crashed into my apartment [which is part of a bigger house],” he said. The impact sent bricks flying, one of which blew the bottom panel of his door off — the same gap he managed to crawl through to escape. Still reeling from the shock, Cele said he could not believe he made it out alive and unharmed.

“If I had been cooking or on my bed — both right next to the wall the vehicle crashed into — I doubt I would be here today, speaking to you,” he said. Many of his belongings were damaged, and Cele will now have to find another place to live as well as funds to replace what was lost. “I cannot complain, because I am still alive,” he said, adding that his brother-in-law had agreed to provide temporary shelter.
