A Westville family has been left shaken, and slightly amused, after two Mozambique spitting cobras were found inside their lounge just weeks apart, both hiding in almost the exact same spot beneath a TV cabinet. KwaZulu-Natal snake rescuers Nick Evans and Carla Goede were called out to the home twice, first on November 30, and again this week, for what has now become one of their strangest repeat rescues. The drama began late on November 30 when the homeowners spotted a snake sliding next to their TV cabinet.
When Evans and Goede arrived, the snake had vanished. After an intensive search, they turned their attention to a nearby speaker with a hole at the back. With the homeowner’s help, they removed the back panel and discovered a juvenile Mozambique spitting cobra curled deep inside the structure.
“The little hook we were using was metal, and something in the speaker had a powerful magnetic pull,” Evans explained. “The cobra then moved behind the round part of the speaker. It was not going well.” Goede then asked the homeowners for a thin plastic stick and returned with a fake flower.

Evans used it to prod around the object in the way, trying to frustrate the cobra into coming out, while Goede was ready with her mini tongs. “Persistence paid off, and Carla grabbed the snake, while I backed off, having zero desire of being spat at. Carla likes the Mozam’s, the mFezi’s, and they, for some reason, don’t seem to mind her,” Evans said.
This week, while Evans was travelling back from Cape Town, another call came from the same address. A second cobra, similar in size to the first, had again taken refuge under the TV cabinet.
