Midlands Wanderers supporters, fresh from celebrating the team’s 2-0 win against Milford FC, may soon face the prospect of watching their side play home games in Durban. On Monday, Abafana Bebatha owner and head coach Vincent “Masenti” Myeni said the side were battling to secure a local sponsor and may be forced to move in search of potential backers. Myeni said the interest arose after eThekwini Municipality informed them that Hammarsdale’s Mpumalanga Stadium was underused.
Myeni said the Durban metro had recently lost two teams — Richards Bay (Betway Premiership) and Milford FC (NFD). “Richards Bay have gone back home, and their home games are now being played at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex after it was revamped by the local government,” said Myeni. “For one or two seasons, Richards Bay were forced to take their fixtures to Durban’s King Zwelithini Stadium.
Also, Milford’s management are from Richards Bay, so they have also gone back to uMhlathuze.” We have been trying our best by engaging them in meetings and inviting them to our home games at Harry Gwala Stadium, but so far nothing has happened. Myeni said that while Msunduzi Municipality does not officially charge for using Harry Gwala Stadium, the club normally arrive to find the field not in a proper standard for play. “Before you stage a home game, you need to sort out certain things such as the lines on the field of play, so paint is always needed.

The pitch also needs to meet the required standard. Small things like these can be costly,” he said. Wanderers play their next match against Leicesterford on January 31 at home — hopefully still at Harry Gwala Stadium.
