Police say they believe they have found the vehicle used in the murder of Madlanga Commission witness D, Marius Van der Merwe. National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola said he met with the investigating team handling Van der Merwe’s case, along with Ipid officials who are probing a separate 2022 murder in Duduza, where a man’s body was found dumped in a dam. “We are meeting with the family of Mr Marius Van der Merwe to brief them on how far we are with investigations into his murder.
“We will be confirming to the family that we do believe we have found the vehicle used in the murder of Mr Van der Merwe,” he said. Van der Merwe was shot dead outside his Brakpan home last Friday night in what police believe was a targeted hit. It was the second attempt on his life in two weeks.
Shortly after 8pm, as he struggled to open his front gate after returning home with his family, gunfire rang out. His wife and children were not harmed. Masemola said video footage from the night of the killing shows a white bakkie pulling up behind Van der Merwe’s vehicle before he was shot several times and died on the scene.

“At this stage, we do believe that the white Chevrolet bakkie that was abandoned in Alexandra township fits the description of the vehicle we have been looking for. According to a preliminary police investigation, the vehicle was abandoned on Saturday morning by two men, just hours after Van der Merwe was shot and killed.” He said crime-scene experts and the vehicle-crime investigation unit were on site in Alexandra, where the bakkie was found on a gravel dead-end road among shacks. The vehicle has been taken to a forensic laboratory for further analysis.
