The 2025 DSAC Salga Games has realised its mission as a vehicle for social cohesion and a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills. Additionally, the games have bolstered both the formal and informal economy in the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, which hosted the games for the first time in seven years. This is according to the uMgungundlovu District Mayor Mzi Zuma, who spoke toThe Witnesson the sidelines of the closing ceremony at the Pietermaritzburg showgrounds on Sunday night.

The closing ceremony celebrated the achievements of the teams from the 11 municipalities in the province who participated. At the closing ceremony, the top three in the various sporting codes and the overall winner, eThekwini Municipality, were announced. KwaZulu-Natal’s South African Local Government Association (Salga) chairperson, Xolani Dube, said those who did not receive a gold, silver, or bronze medal should not be discouraged.

The enthusiasm, excitement, and exceptional sportsmanship on and off the field displayed by all the athletes is an accomplishment in and of itself, he said. “Those who did not emerge victorious should not be discouraged, as their effort and resilience have not gone unnoticed, and the knowledge gained from these games can be used as a stepping stone for future success,” Dube said. He added that while local and provincial leadership were present for many of the games, the games would not have been possible without the coaches and athletes who are the heartbeat and engine of the games. Each participant, regardless of the outcome, has contributed to the Salga DSAC Games, which is more than just a competition, but a celebration of unity and the diversity in our province.”
