A man who shot and killed a woman in her uMzimkhulu home before stealing clothing and bags has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 36 years by the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Thandanani Simphiwe Mahlaba was convicted on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and housebreaking with intent to steal. The crimes were committed in September 2023 in the Blemar area of uMzimkhulu.

According to evidence presented in court, Mahlaba broke into the 40-year-old woman’s home late at night while she and her family were asleep. Armed with a firearm, he entered the bedroom and shot her several times in the forehead, killing her instantly. He then stole clothing, shoes and two bags before fleeing on foot.

Police arrested him the following day and recovered both the stolen items and the firearm. “Prosecutor advocate Dan Magwaza led the testimonies of police officers who responded to the scene, those who arrested Mahlaba, the pathologist who examined the victim, and family members who witnessed the shooting.” In aggravation of sentence, the court also considered victim impact statements compiled by the woman’s relatives and facilitated by court preparation officer Beaufort Shinga. “Her family described her as a loving and joyful presence whose loss has left them devastated,” said NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara. The judge imposed life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for robbery, 15 years for unlawful possession of a firearm, three years for housebreaking and three years for possession of ammunition.
