Municipal spokespersons confirmed the incident, at the corner of Dorothy Nyembe and Anton Lembede streets, was not gas-related, but the result of electrical cable arcing. According to the municipality, arcing occurs when electricity jumps between damaged conductors, producing a visible spark or flare. In this case, the flare came from minor cable damage, not an explosion or failing infrastructure.
The City stressed that no one was injured, no fatalities were recorded, and there were no electricity outages linked to the incident. The municipality’s Energy Management team was immediately dispatched and quickly contained the situation. eThekwini has urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information.
“We strongly encourage the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate updates and to refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports that may cause unnecessary alarm,” the municipality said. The City said repairs and further assessments are under way to ensure the network remains safe and stable.
