Suspended EMPD acting chief, Julius Mkhwanazi is back at the Madlanga Commission. SuspendedJohannesburg Metro Police Department (EMPD) chief Julius Mkhwanaziresumed his testimony at the Madlanga Commission on Thursday, following a tense exchange with the panel on Wednesday. In a bombshell admission, Mkhwanazi admitted that he received money from criminal tycoon, Vusimusi “CAT” Matlala on many occasions.

Mkhwanazi says the money was for petrol and food and for funeral expenses. The highest he has received is between R15,000 to R20,000, he said. However, Mkhwanazi was then presented with a document detailing three deposits into the bank account he confirmed is his.

The records show a payment of R20,000 from CAT VIP on May 5 2022, another R20,000 from Medicare24 Tshwane District on June 18 2022 and a further R30,000 on December 10 2022 from Black AK. The first payment was for him to bury his brother, he said. While, the Black AK company linked to Matlala was previously flagged in the Tembisa looting scandal.

Mkhwanazi admitted to this and “Matlala helped me a lot because I was struggling.” Testifying on Thursday, Mkhwanazi still denied that he physically installed blue lights on criminal tycoon, Vusimusi “CAT” Matlala’s vehicles. “Commissioners, I can’t accept this I did not do it… I can’t go to jail and leave my kids over blue lights,” he said. But commissioner, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, clarified that the allegation was not that he physically helped in putting the lights on the cars but rather enabled the process.
