Government departments presenting at the uMngeni Integrated Development Plan (IDP) forum came under fire for providing information that had little relevance to uMngeni. Mayor Chris Pappas intervened twice during a presentation by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Edtea), accusing the department of recycling the same content presented in previous years. The exchange took place during Thursday’s IDP forum, which was also attended by the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Thulasizwe Buthelezi.
“I’ve been the mayor for four years and I’ve seen the same presentation. I don’t want us to sit here for hours and waste the MEC’s time listening to something we can find on the internet,” Pappas said. He called on all departments to provide action-oriented inputs and practical solutions to the challenges faced in uMngeni, rather than delivering broad overviews of their mandates. “I want to know what’s being done to improve Midmar Dam, tourism and other things,” Pappas added.
