Karonga Diocese builds school blocks in Chitipa

Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church has constructed three classroom blocks and five teachers’ houses at Mkule Primary School to improve access to education in Sub- Traditional Authority Kopakopa in Chitipa District. On Monday, the diocese’s bishop Martin Mtumbuka handed over the structures to Chitipa District Council. He emphasised the church’s role in implementing government’s efforts to construct learning infrastructure.

He said : “We a r e implementing the Cross Catholic Out-reach Community Transformation Project which seeks to improve people’s well-being in food security, fighting non-communicable diseases and evangelism. “However, the project identified the huge gap at this remote school which had dilapidated school blocks. We feel that these learners also deserve better learning environment just like any other learner in semi-urban areas.” Mtumbuka has since urged parents and traditional leaders to take care of the facilities by forming a committee responsible for maintenance of the structures.

On his part, group village head Thumbo commended the diocese for the structures. He assured the bishop of the community leaders’ role in taking care of the facilities. “We are grateful.

Chitipa district director of education, youths and sports MacGiven Chinyamula thanked the diocese for constructing durable structures. “While I hail the diocese for being a development partner, I urge teachers to work hard to produce outstanding results because they have beautiful houses, enough books and school blocks,” he said.
