The Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Geviza Fadzai, in connection with the suspected murder of her three-year-old daughter in Village 2, Fair Range, Mkwasine, on 25 November 2025.Police said the suspect allegedly stabbed the child on the neck with a knife before attempting to mislead neighbours and community leaders about what had happened. According to the ZRP, Fadzai first approached a neighbour claiming her daughter had been attacked by four unknown assailants.After leaving the neighbour’s home, she reportedly went to the village head and gave a different account. Police said she told the village head that the child had died from natural causes.The offence came to light during burial preparations when those present noticed a deep cut on the child’s neck.

A report was immediately made at ZRP Mkwasine, prompting officers to open investigations into the death.In a statement, the ZRP confirmed that initial findings contradicted the explanations given by the mother. “Police investigations established that the suspect allegedly killed her daughter so that she could marry her new boyfriend, who was unwilling to marry her while she had a child,” the statement read.Following the report, officers attended the scene and took the child’s body to Chiredzi General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Results from the examination are expected to assist in finalising the murder case.Police said investigations are ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody pending further action.

Authorities urged the public to report any suspicious activities to their nearest police station.The ZRP also encouraged communities to work closely with law enforcement to safeguard vulnerable children and ensure that cases of violence are promptly reported.
