Danisa Masuku,Court WriterBULAWAYO High Court judge, Justice Munamato Mutevedzi, yesterday lambasted double-murder convict Peter Dube, branding him a “sadist” and “psychopath” who treated his victims as objects. He said Dube’s conduct exemplified the folly of men who believe they possess divine authority to control the women they claim to love.Dube, a Gweru-based businessman and polygamist, faced two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder after accusing his second wife, Nyasha Nharingo, of engaging in an extramarital affair. Justice Mutevedzi said Dube was a coward who failed to confront his wife to ascertain whether his suspicions were true.On April 22, 2021, Dube “adopted a wartime strategy”, opening fire and killing his wife in cold blood. In a fit of violent, uncontrollable, and misguided rage, he then fatally shot Shelton Chiduku and Gamuchirai Madungwe. The judge said Dube returned to the room and shot Nyasha and Nyaradzo Nharingo, leaving both women seriously injured.

“The bullet entered Nyasha’s cheek and exited through the opposite side of her neck. The doctor who examined her said the base of the skull was fractured,” the court heard.“Dube then shot Nyaradzo, the bullet striking just above her right eye and rupturing it. Satisfied with his grisly handiwork, the accused nonchalantly walked out, leaving behind a scene that resembled a graveyard.” Nyaradzo later died from complications arising from her injuries.Justice Mutevedzi questioned why prosecutors had not added Nyaradzo’s death to the murder charges.

“She never recovered from her gunshot wounds and later died, yet prosecutors did not charge Dube with her murder. Why that death was not added can only be explained by the prosecution,” he said.He described the injuries inflicted on Nyasha and Nyaradzo as horrific. “Her daughter told the court that Nyaradzo’s life before her death was miserable and the deaths meant little to the accused, who fled after committing the crime,” said the judge.Dube was sentenced to two life terms for the murders and received 10 years for each count of attempted murder.

Justice Mutevedzi concurred with State prosecutors, Deputy Prosecutor-General Ms Tariro Rosa Takuva (Southern Region) and Prosecutor Kenneth Shava, who argued that the crimes were premeditated and committed in aggravating circumstances.“The accused shot and killed two people in succession, and he intended to kill the first and second complainants,” he said.He added: “The accused’s conduct was not only unlawful but heinous. The calculated use of a lethal weapon on multiple victims, the callous disregard for human life, and the subsequent flight from justice reflect aggravated criminality. The long-lasting impact on the victims’ families and society justifies a severe and deterrent sentence.”The court observed that Dube showed no remorse and lied about paying compensation to the victims’ families.“He claimed to have compensated the parents of the deceased, but in fact he did not pay anything,” the judge noted.Reading Nyaradzo’s victim impact statement, Justice Mutevedzi said:“I lost my job.

I am emotionally and psychologically drained. I suffer from continuous headaches.“I cannot freely mingle with other people. I require daily assistance at home and have no life outside my father’s premises.

I am surviving only by God’s grace.”The judge continued detailing her hardships: “She was a hotel manager in South Africa. She lent the offender R26 000 and gave him a Honda Fit valued at US$8 500, intending to trade it in for a higher-value car.“She did not expect to recover anything and what is more painful is that she died before seeing justice delivered.”Justice Mutevedzi also highlighted the emotional and psychological trauma suffered by Nyasha. The court noted how Dube fled Gweru the same night, assisted by his first wife, Chawana. He fled to South Africa, then Eswatini, acquired a fake Mozambican identity and eventually flew to Ireland, where he lived for years.

His cover was later blown, leading to his deportation to Mozambique and subsequently to Zimbabwe for trial.Leave a ReplyCancel reply Danisa Masuku,Court WriterBULAWAYO High Court judge, Justice Munamato Mutevedzi, yesterday lambasted double-murder convict Peter Dube, branding him a “sadist” and “psychopath” who treated his victims as objects.
