Gweru fugitive Peter Dube has been sentenced to two life imprisonment terms plus an additional 20 years by the High Court in Bulawayo for two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.Justice Munamato Mutevedzi delivered the sentence on Tuesday, following Dube’s conviction on 14 November. The ruling brings closure to a case that began more than three years ago.Dube was found guilty of shooting and killing Shelton Chiduku and Gamuchirai Mudungwe in April 2021. Both were known to him, and the court heard that the shootings occurred during a confrontation involving his second wife.According to the state, Dube also shot his wife, Nyasha, and her sister, Nyaradzo Nharingo, during the same incident.
The two women survived the attack and later provided statements that assisted investigators.After the shootings, Dube fled Zimbabwe and remained on the run for more than two years. Authorities confirmed that he travelled through several countries before settling in Ireland, where he attempted to start a new life.Irish authorities arrested Dube in June 2023 after confirming his identity through cooperation with Zimbabwean law enforcement agencies. He was later extradited to face charges.During sentencing, Justice Mutevedzi said the court had considered the seriousness of the offences.
“The loss of life and the harm caused in this matter cannot be ignored,” he said while delivering judgment.The two life sentences are for the murders of Chiduku and Mudungwe, while the additional 20-year term covers the attempted murder of Nyasha and Nyaradzo.
