Opposition party ZAPU has launched a fresh youth mobilisation campaign through a series of sports tournaments targeting rural communities across the country, in what officials describe as an effort to “harness the energy and creativity” of young people. The initiative follows a similar event held in October 2025 at Makorokoro Ward 17 in Tjedza, Plumtree, an area regarded as a stronghold of the party’s youth-led structures under Councillor Mpendulo Ncube. Senior party figures including Ndodana Moyo, Mncedisi Tshabalala, Patrick Dube and Battalion Maphane attended the previous tournament, which featured football and netball competitions.
Speaking toCITE, ZAPU Matabeleland South Treasurer Sikhanyisile Moyo said the sports activities are intended to draw young people into civic and political engagement. Moyo said the programme’s objectives include increasing youth participation in community development, developing leadership skills, supporting talent identification and strengthening social cohesion. The next tournament is scheduled for 29 November 2025 in Lumene, Gwanda North Constituency.
