Two people died on Friday in a fatal road traffic accident near Kaguvi Training Centre, just outside Gweru, along the Harare–Gweru highway.

The collision involved a Govasberg bus heading towards Kwekwe and a small lorry travelling to Gweru. According to eyewitness accounts, the two victims died on the spot.

“I was travelling in front of the bus when the accident happened,” said Mr Enock Mupanzarimwa, an eyewitness. “The driver of the bus was behind a Honda Fit, which suddenly applied brakes after spotting a stationary truck.

The bus driver swerved to the extreme right to avoid a collision, but the small lorry’s driver seemed to panic and pulled off the road, causing a head-on collision.”

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and urged drivers to exercise caution as the Heroes’ and Defence Forces holidays approach.

“It is very sad when we continue to lose lives at such an alarming rate,” Ncube said. “We need to be smart on the roads. We are heading for holidays, and we are all aware of what normally happens during such times.

Let us also avoid travelling at night.”

The bus was reportedly carrying members of the Happiness National Apostolic Faith Mission Holy Ghost Church, who were en route to Gokwe Centre for a religious gathering.

This latest tragedy comes just days after a horrific accident in Chitungwiza that claimed 17 lives, leaving the nation mourning once again.
