Plumtree town council workers build sand either side of railway tracks to build temporary crossing.
BULAWAYO – The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has condemned the Plumtree Town Council for allegedly constructing an illegal makeshift level crossing on the Plumtree–Francistown railway line, warning that such actions endanger rail operations and public safety.
In a statement, the NRZ advised members of the public and local authorities against erecting level crossings on their own without consulting the railway operator.
“The NRZ advises the public against erecting level crossings on tracks on their own. People who want level crossings at places convenient to them should contact our Infrastructure Branch for assistance,” the parastatal said.
“It is illegal for individuals or companies to put up level crossings on their own as this can damage rail infrastructure.”.
The rail operator said the unauthorised crossing, allegedly installed by Plumtree Town Council workers, has made the section of track vulnerable to water logging, threatening the smooth movement of trains on the strategic export corridor linking Zimbabwe and Botswana.
NRZ said it remains available to work with communities and institutions that require authorised access points.
“The NRZ is always ready to assist communities in the setting up of proper and legal level crossings if approached,” the statement added.
