By A Correspondent| In a rare public contradiction, Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba has seemingly rebuked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for referring to a regional meeting in South Africa as a “Summit of Former Liberation Movements.”

Charamba, writing under his well-known X (formerly Twitter) alias @Jamwanda2, fired a strongly worded post rejecting the term “former,” arguing that the liberation credentials of the movements involved are permanent and not open to redefinition.

“MEDIA, KINDLY NOTE: There is nothing called FORMER Liberation Movements; only LIBERATION MOVEMENTS. It’s an historical and historic TITLE from which none of the movements can abdicate!!! In any case, if you say FORMER, you should be prepared to tell us which movement you have arbitrarily installed as CURRENT and FUTURE liberation movement!!!”wrote Charamba.

While the tweet was targeted at the media, his boss repeated the same mistake later, raising questions marks on who could be correct or wrong between the wordsmith and his boss.

“At the Summit of Former Liberation Movements, I called for unity in defending our sovereignty and advancing people-centred development. Liberation movements must remain bold, focused, and committed to transforming lives across our region,”Mnangagwa tweeted.

The gathering in South Africa brought together liberation movement-aligned ruling parties from across the region, including the ANC (South Africa), ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe), MPLA (Angola), SWAPO (Namibia), FRELIMO (Mozambique), and CCM (Tanzania), to reaffirm solidarity and explore strategies for remaining relevant in increasingly restive political landscapes.
