MASVINGO – Four people have been killed while 14 others were injured after a Munenzva bus carrying 26 passengers veered off the road, overturned and landed on its roof along the Masvingo–Beitbridge Road on Sunday, police said.
Police said the crash occurred at around 5.20PM.
Accident scene pictures and videos showed the Cape Town-bound bus, made by Scania, lying on its roof.
The injured were rushed to Rutenga Clinic before being transferred to Neshuro Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Police said the identities of the victims would be released once their next of kin have been notified.
In a statement, the ZRP extended condolences to the grieving families and urged drivers to strictly observe road rules, warning that negligence, poor vehicle condition and speeding continue to cost lives.
“As the country approaches the festive season, we urge vehicle owners and drivers to… help promote road safety,” the police said, adding that motorists should ensure their vehicles are regularly serviced, tyres are well-maintained and windscreens and wipers are functional — especially during the rainy season.
Police further encouraged public transport passengers to report reckless or dangerous driving and reminded drivers not to harass or threaten passengers who raise safety concerns.
With heavy rains expected, motorists were also warned against attempting to cross flooded rivers and bridges.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to be responsible and work closely with law enforcement agents to curb road traffic accidents,” the statement said.
