finance minister mthuli ncube has confirmed that the zimbabwe government has purchased the monomotapa crowne plaza hotel in harare to house members of parliament (mps) during parliamentary sittings.ncube made the announcement during a pre-budget seminar in bulawayo on wednesday, surprising legislators when he revealed that the government had completed the purchase. “did we ever tell the mps that we bought them a hotel? if you allow me, i’m going to announce today that we have bought you a hotel. it’s monomotapa hotel,” ncube told the gathering.the 182-bed hotel, located in central harare, was bought from african sun limited through the public service pension fund in august.
the transaction, according to ncube, was aimed at ensuring comfort and convenience for mps during sittings and national events.“this strategic move is meant to provide accommodation for mps while also reducing costs previously incurred through private hotel bookings,” ncube said.although he did not provide full financial details of the deal, ncube hinted that the facility would operate as a self-sustaining entity when not in use by mps. “we will now come up with a scheme of how it can be utilised for the benefit of mps. when you’re not using it, it can earn revenue for its upkeep,” he explained.according to media reports, the purchase price for the hotel and related assets was around us$18 million.
