Our #MCM today is Shingai Mutasa — a towering figure in Zimbabwean business whose career spans commodity trading, strategic acquisitions, and visionary urban development. Born Shingayi Stanley Mutasa in Mutare on November 26, 1958, he studied Economics at University College London before returning to Zimbabwe in 1980. His early foray into commodity broking laid the foundation for a career defined by bold moves and long-term vision. Today, he stands as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential entrepreneurs, with interests cutting across insurance, energy, hospitality, telecommunications, and agriculture.

Shingai Mutasa Mutasa’s defining business move came in 1997 when he acquired TA Holdings, a diversified conglomerate listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. Despite inheriting a company burdened with debt, he transformed it into Masawara Plc — a Zimbabwe-focused investment firm later listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange. His operator-investor philosophy ensures Masawara is deeply involved in the operations and strategic direction of its investee companies, from insurance giants like Zimnat to agro-industrial players like Sable Chemicals and Zimbabwe Fertiliser Company.

As Group CEO of Masawara, Mutasa leads with a sharp eye for capital allocation and sustainable growth. His business empire includes broadband ventures like iWayAfrica and Telerix Communications, and hospitality assets such as the Cresta Group of Hotels. In 2010, Masawara attracted major UK investment funds, including Invesco Income and Invesco High Income, which took a 30% stake — a testament to the firm’s credibility and Mutasa’s global business acumen.

Beyond boardrooms and balance sheets, Mutasa is also the visionary behind Joina City, Zimbabwe’s tallest shopping mall and a landmark in Harare’s skyline. Conceived after conversations with the late architect Vernon Mwamuka, Joina City reflects Mutasa’s belief in permanence, excellence, and urban transformation. It stands not just as a commercial hub but as a symbol of Zimbabwean ambition and architectural pride.

Joina City In recognition of his contributions to business and leadership, Shingai Mutasa was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Leadership by Africa University in July 2021. Married to Karen Mutasa and father to Mudiwa, he continues to shape Zimbabwe’s economic landscape with clarity, conviction, and a relentless drive to build platforms of permanence. From commodity trading to constructing city landmarks, Mutasa’s journey is a masterclass in vision-driven entrepreneurship.
