The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a suspected case of food poisoning that claimed the lives of two children and left 14 others critically ill after a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava, Masvingo, on 27 October 2025.According to police, the victims had gathered for a traditional ritual ceremony where they ate sadza and drank mahewu. Shortly after the meal, several attendees began to experience severe stomach pains.Tragically, two minors aged three and seven years died as a result of the illness.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a sad incident where two children died while 14 others… are critically ill after attending a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava area,” the police said in a statement.Authorities confirmed that the affected group includes seven adults and four children who are currently in critical condition. They were taken to Masvingo General Hospital for emergency treatment.Three other people are being treated at Mashava Clinic for similar symptoms, while health officials continue to monitor their condition. The source of the suspected poisoning has not yet been determined.Preliminary information indicates that both the food and the mahewu consumed at the event are under investigation as possible causes.

Samples have been collected for testing to determine whether the poisoning was caused by contamination or other toxic substances.Police and health authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when preparing and consuming food and beverages during community gatherings. Investigations are ongoing, and updates will be released once more details are available.The ZRP extended condolences to the bereaved family and said it remains committed to uncovering the cause of the incident to prevent similar tragedies in future.
