Chevrons turn focus to T20 series against Afghanistan

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports EditorTHE Zimbabwe men’s national cricket team, the Chevrons, have shifted their focus from the red-ball format to the shortest version of the game as they prepare to take on Afghanistan in a three-match T20 International series at Harare Sports Club this week. The series, which kicks off on Wednesday, comes just days after the Chevrons’ commanding innings victory in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. With the ICC T20 World Cup looming, focus has now turned sharply toward fine-tuning the squad for the high-tempo demands of white-ball cricket.Coach Justin Sammons has retained the squad that was on duty in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers last month, with only one change: spinner Graeme Cremer, who is replacing Trevor Gwandu. The 39-year-old former captain and leg spinner makes a surprise comeback to the T20I squad after several years away from international cricket. His experience and guile are expected to bolster Zimbabwe’s spin department against a power-hitting Afghan lineup known for its aggressive middle order. The selectors have also emphasised balance, blending youthful flair with experience. The likes of Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani will be tasked with providing brisk starts, while seniors, Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl and Brendan Taylor bring stability and finishing power. The fast-bowling unit will be led by the aggressive Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava, while young Tinotenda Maposa will be eager to prove his mettle, with the spin department also looking to weave its magic.Afghanistan are, however, unlikely to make life easy for the Chevrons, with their spin department, led by Rashid Khan, being one of the most feared in world cricket. For Zimbabwe, the series represents more than just another contest. It is a rehearsal for the world stage, a chance to blend the old with the new, and a test of how far the Chevrons have come in balancing flair with consistency. If they can carry their Test form into the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, the fans might just witness the spark of a team ready to roar again with the World Cup on the horizon.
