Story by Fungai JachiZIMBABWEANS from all walks of life gathered at the National Heroes Acre in Harare this Monday to pay their last respects to National Hero, Brigadier General (Rtd) Mpandasekwa Mzheri, who was described as a dedicated leader, a man of integrity, and a true servant of the nation.Family members, colleagues, and church representatives spoke glowingly of the late national hero’s commitment to service, humility, and faith.Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri’s uncle, Mr Makari Zhou, described him as a hardworking and honest man who continued serving the nation even after his retirement.“He was a hard worker and an honest man who served his country even after retiring. He believed that service never ends. He was not just a soldier but also a humble family man. We will hold on to his legacy,” said Mr Zhou.His daughter, Ms Anesu Mzheri, described her father as a loving parent and a great teacher who led by example.“He was a great father who loved us deeply. He was kind and taught us well. Though it is hard to say goodbye, we celebrate his life because he lived it to the fullest,” she said.Colleagues and friends echoed similar sentiments, with Honourable Joram Gumbo noting that Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri’s selfless service and leadership left an indelible mark.“We celebrate the life he lived because he was a great leader. His good works have followed him to his grave, and as a province, we are grateful to the President for honouring him,” said Honourable Gumbo.Reverend Victor Maramwidze of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe described him as a humble believer who remained committed to the work of God.“He was a great man who loved God and helped where he could. We have lost a believer, but we are comforted that he died in Christ and was given the highest honour,” he said.As the casket was carried by the bearer party to his final resting place, sombre emotions filled the air. Mourners wept as the coffin was lowered, marking the end of a life defined by courage, dedication, and humility.Brigadier General (Rtd) Mzheri will be remembered as a patriot who served Zimbabwe with distinction both before and after independence, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, love, and unwavering commitment to national service.
