A 48-year-old man from Ngundu in Masvingo has died after consuming two litres of a sexual enhancement concoction known locally asguchu, police have confirmed.The man, identified as Knowledge Chikafu of Mutsimba Village, Headman Gororo in Chivi, reportedly began vomiting shortly after drinking the mixture on Sunday around 2 PM.According to police, Chikafu was rushed by his brother, Peter Chikafu, to Gororo Clinic for treatment. He was later referred to Chivi District Hospital as his condition deteriorated.Medical staff at Chivi District Hospital transferred him to Masvingo Provincial Hospital, where he was admitted. Despite efforts to save his life, he died on Wednesday evening.Police confirmed that a postmortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.Masvingo Police Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, said investigations led to the arrest of 71-year-old Juliet Majoni of Chikamure Village, Headman Madzivire, in Chivi.
She is accused of selling the concoction to Chikafu.Authorities also recovered a bucket allegedly used in the preparation of the substance. Samples have been secured for further examination.Assistant Inspector Patinyu urged members of the public to avoid consuming unregulated substances sold by unlicensed individuals.“As the Police, we encourage citizens not to buy concoctions from unlicensed practitioners to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” he said.The death has raised alarm in the local community, where unlicensed herbal remedies are sometimes used for sexual enhancement and other health-related purposes.Police said they are continuing investigations to establish whether Majoni had been selling the concoction to other people in the area.Health officials have also warned of the dangers of consuming mixtures whose ingredients and dosage are not scientifically verified.Community members who spoke to authorities expressed shock at the incident, describing Chikafu’s death as a tragic reminder of the risks linked to unregulated traditional substances.Police reiterated their appeal for people to seek proper medical advice and treatment from licensed healthcare providers rather than resort to unsafe alternatives.Funeral arrangements for Chikafu will be made by his family in Mutsimba Village.
