Chikomba community enjoys electricity connectivity

Story by Wadzanai MandimaTHE government’s drive to achieve an upper-middle-income economy by 2030 continues to gain traction, with the Chikomba community in Chivhu becoming the latest beneficiary of the accelerated Rural Electrification Programme.Through this initiative, three schools and two business centres have been successfully connected to the national power grid, improving access to electricity and enhancing socio-economic development in the area.Beneficiaries concur government is walking the talk in transforming their lives under the inclusive development mantra.“I am happy with this development as teachers no longer wish to transfer to towns, and that is an advantage to our children,” a teacher said.“The development is set to increase the viability of our businesses since we can now operate until late into the evening,” a community member said.“As learners from this area, we are excited that we can now learn using computers since we now have electricity,” a pupil said.“Our children are not being left behind as they have access to computers, just like their urban counterparts,” a parent said.REA Provincial Manager for Mashonaland East, Engineer Edward Kandare, speaks on the scope of the electrification programme, which targets to electrify all rural areas in the province by 2030.“In this Province, we have electrified quite a big number of institutions. This gives me the confidence to say that come 2030, all the rural areas here would have been electrified,” he said.Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Itai Ndudzo said the electrification of Chikomba reflects government’s commitment to the attainment of an upper middle-income society by 2030.“The coming of electricity is in line with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which states that no one and no place will be left behind,” he said.The electrification programme is in line with the government’s rural industrialisation drive, which seeks to create rural economies and transform lives under the inclusive development approach.
