Crime & CourtNewsHarare- A suspected armed robber staged a daring movie-style escape attempt while detained at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where he was being held under the watchful eye of a prison guard.According to sources at the institution, the escape attempt was aided by the robber’s wife and sister.The armed robber was identified as Simbarashe Makunura and he had been transferred from Chikurubi maximum prison prior to the botched escape.He was being treated from an unknown ailment and wounds.During his detainment at the hospital, the suspect’s wife would bring food.“On 20 September 2025 during the visit the wife Delight Nhepera took advantage of the newly found friendship with the prison guard and snatched his rifle while he was off guard.“She immediately pointed the rifle at the prison guard ordering his bed ridden husband to dress up.“She then handed the rifle to her husband so that they escape,” said the source.Makunura’s sister was part of the plan in the prison escape.During this stand off, the prison guard reacted and jumped at the armed robber.“The duo wrestled for a few minutes and during this scuffle, the gun went off thrice.“Luckily, the prison guard managed to fight back and disarmed the suspect.
