A HARARE businessman appeared at the Magistrates Courts on Tuesday facing a charge of defrauding the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) of ZiG2 million in a botched clearing deal through his company Trevomz Industries Private Limited. Trevor Zibgwowa (35) appeared before Harare magistrate Lisa Mutendereki, who granted him US$500 bail. The prosecution, led by Lancelot Mutsokoti, alleged that on August 30 this year, Zibgwowa made a fake deposit into a Zimra account amounting to ZiG2 149 2480 on behalf of his company.

Acting on the misrepresentation, Zimra sanctioned Zibgwowa to clear the goods for the amount which he had purported to have deposited. On September 8 this year, Zimra received information that the deposit Zibgwowa made was fake. Zimra conducted an internal audit into its system and it confirmed that the deposit was fake. According to court documents on September 19, Zimra made a report to the police, leading to Zibgwowa’s arrest.
