Police arrest 381 in Matabeleland North drug crackdown

Of the 381 suspects, 24 were referred to court, resulting in 13 convictions, while 357 were given deposit fines.

Police also targeted the supply chain, arresting 20 known suppliers and destroying five operational drug bases.

The total value of all recovered contraband was pegged at ZWG196 400.

Acting Officer-in-Charge for CID Drugs and Narcotics in Matabeleland North, Detective Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Ndonga, stressed the need for a collaborative approach. “Drug and substance abuse is one of the most pervasive problems facing our nation.

As the ZRP under the Supply Reduction Pillar, we have heeded the clarion call from Government and Cabinet directives to fight this scourge.

Our goal is clear, a drug and substance abuse-free Matabeleland North,” he said.

Despite the progress, Det Asst Insp Ndonga highlighted key challenges faced by law enforcement, including a shortage of patrol vehicles, lack of surveillance equipment, and inadequate funding.

He also pointed out the absence of local drug testing facilities as a major setback. “The absence of drug testing facilities in provinces is a major setback.

Our members often have to send samples to Harare for confirmation, which delays investigations and prosecution,” Det Asst Insp Ndonga noted.

The fundraising event, which was attended by ministers and other civic leaders, raised US$120 000.

Ndonga said the funds would support enforcement, rehabilitation, and community education programmes. “Drugs and substance abuse is not just an individual battle but a challenge that affects families, communities, and society as a whole.
