Farmers have been urged to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the economy through increased yields.
Speaking at the Artificial Intelligence Summit for Africa 2025 which is being hosted by Alpha Media Holdings publication Zimbabwe Independent in partnership with the Artificial Intelligence Institute Africa (AIIA), World Federation of Engineering Organisations vice president Martin Manuhwa urged farmers, who reap yields lower than the global average to use AI in their fields. “It is very important that the agriculture landscape is in a research agenda and shall be in AI,” he said. “This landscape, like I said, 80% of farms are below two hectares and their yields are 20% to 30% of global average
“Isn’t this sad?
So if we incorporate AI we will not have food insecurity in Africa at all. ”
Manuhwa added that leveraging AI would help farmers to benefit from timely alerts for weather-related events, pests and diseases.
Africa can unlock its agricultural potential and achieve food security, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for its people. 🔗
