Lovemore KadzuraPost Reporter IN a poignant ceremony, 68 fallen heroes, who lost their lives during the liberation struggle in at Ruwombwe Mountain in Makoni West Constituency, were reburied today, bringing closure to their families and the nation. The fallen heroes, exhumed from Ruwombwe Mountain, surrounding areas, and Nyazura, by Manicaland Identification, Verification, Exhumation and Reburial of Fallen Heroes Trust, were reburied at the shrine after a four-month-long process. Fifty-two were laid to rest at the Ruwombwe Shrine, while 16 were handed over to their families for burial in their respective areas.
The reburial exercise was officiated by Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Honourable Monica Mavhunga, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, and Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza. Minister Mavhunga underscored the Government’s commitment to providing proper burials for the gallant sons and daughters, who sacrificed their lives for the country’s liberation. “We gather to give decent burials to 68 freedom fighters who perished at the hands of a cruel and oppressive government.
The Ruwombwe casualties are victims of countless battles fought across the country, where freedom fighters and masses lost their lives and did not live to celebrate our hard-won independence,” said Minister Mavhunga. Minister Muswere, who is also the Member of House of Assembly for Makoni West Constituency, urged the nation to remain loyal to the values of the liberation struggle and work towards the country’s economic development. “The exhumation and reburial of fallen heroes is an ongoing process spearheaded by the Government.
Let us protect the values of the liberation struggle advanced by both living and departed heroes. Let us work together to achieve Vision 2030,” he said. Chief Makoni applauded the Government for according the fallen heroes proper burials in line with the country’s culture and traditions.
