A press statement issued by the police states that from December 18 to December 28 the country recorded 14 accidents which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, a sharp increase as compared to the same period last year, where 19 deaths were recorded in 18 road accidents. “Worth noting are three accidents that claimed multiple lives , which occurred along the A10 road where six people died,” the police statement reads in part. The Police further state that in some of the accidents more than one family member died.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the primary cause of these accidents remains consistent, speeding, reckless overtaking, drunk driving and driving without due care and attention,” police state. The police urged motorists to drive with caution as the festive season continues. The crimes detailed elsewhere in this edition from the loss of a former minister to the heartbreaking murder of a child, and public arson to relentless gender-based violence, paint a distressing picture of a society under strain.These are not isolated tragedies. They are a collective alarm bell, ringing out as we enter a period meant for peace and goodwill.The festive season, while a time of joy, can also amplify existing pressures.
