KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has revealed alarming statistics on political killings in the province, showing that councillors face extreme danger. The KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s office says 18 councillors have been assassinated since the 2021 Local Government Elections, making the province the epicentre of such killings. Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli provided the statistics in response to the murder of eThekwini Municipality Councillor Sibusiso Khwela, who was shot andkilledat his offices in Klaarwater, west of Durban, on Thursday.
According to police, a man walked intoKhwela’s office, shot him, and fled in a waiting car. Police are searching for the gunman. Ntuli called for calm, political tolerance andpeacefulcoexistence across KZN during the run-up to the LGE in November.
He said political competition and differences must never justify violence, intimidation or assassination. “Political differences must be settled through democratic processes, not violence,” he said.
