Christmas Day 2025 marked a season of double celebration for thousands of families across Malawi as the country welcomed at least 1 772 babies born across 27 of the nation’s 28 districts. According to Ministry of Health statistics, 1 752 of these deliveries were live births. The gender split was nearly even, with 920 males (52 percent) and 852 females (48 percent).

This year’s figure represents a significant increase of 285 births compared to 2024 when 1 487 babies were delivered. The statistics further show that Lilongwe District Health Office topped the list with 271 babies born. Kasungu District recorded 91 births while Zomba recorded 77 births.

The statistics further shows there were nine sets of twins with Karonga topping the list with three sets of twin babies , Ntcheu had two sets of twins while Nkhotakota, Mangochi, Machinga and Neno had a set each. Likoma District is the only district that did not register any birth on Christmas Day. The figure is higher with 285 births compared to last year when 1 487 babies were born on Christmas Day.

Commenting on the figures, Malawi Health Equity Network (Mhen) executive director George Jobe said the statistics show that fertility rate is high in the country Jobe called on the Ministry of Health to analyse the data and see if the majority of the parents are youths so that stakeholders should devise interventions. Said Jobe: “What it means is that our fertility rate is high. What has happened on Christmas Day can happen even on any other day.

It should be a reflection of what is happening every day. “If we continue this trend, our population will eventually outweigh our resources. We should seriously take family planning interventions.” Malawi recorded 1 462 Christmas babies in 2023, 1 628 in 2022 and 1 400 in 2021.
