Guns surrendered

Midsec Security Company, which was last month slapped with a US$700 fine for failing to renew 19 service firearms licences, has surrendered nine more unlicenced guns to Kadoma Police Station for investigations.


Early last month, the security company was arraigned before the Kadoma Magistrates Courts for failing to renew licences for 19 service weapons and got away with a fine for breaking the Firearms Act.

Police in Kadoma yesterday said the security company’s branch manager Mr Gideon Mangoma surrendered the nine guns as investigations into the case continue. This came after police received a tip-off that Midsec was still in possession of unlicenced guns.

Unconfirmed reports yesterday were that company officials discovered that detectives wanted to raid their premises and quickly surrendered the guns. The weapons include a star pistol, a revolver, two .303 rifles and five shotguns. Last month the company was convicted on its own plea of guilty to charges of contravening the Firearms Act before magistrate Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi. Some of the firearm certificates were last renewed between 1997 and 2007. Of the 19 guns, there were seven pistols, seven shotguns and five rifles. — Crime Reporter.
